Filmed Prince of Egypt Musical Heads to Cinemas This October

Following multiple delays, the live capture of the recent London production of "The Prince of Egypt - the Musical" is set to hit cinemas in the UK & Ireland this coming October! Trafalgar Releasing (Anything Goes, The King and I), is set to distribute the Dreamworks-produced film.

This filmed version, captured just before the curtain fell on the West End show in December 2021, was documented by STEAM Motion and Sound. This production company boasts prior experience filming successful Broadway and West End hits like "Waitress," "Aladdin," "Kinky Boots," and the recent capture of "Heathers the Musical."

Starring Luke Brady as Moses, Liam Tamne as Ramses, Christine Allado as Tzipporah, and Alexia Khadime as Miriam, the recorded performance will make its debut in cinemas across the UK starting this October.

Here's a comprehensive rundown of all the details we currently have about the cinema release of the Stephen Schwartz musical:

The Prince of Egypt had a brief run at the Dominion Theatre, opening shortly before the theater industry shut down in 2020. This musical had two short engagements but ultimately concluded its run in January 2022. However, it was captured on film for release in December 2021 by Universal Studios International.

Composed by Stephen Schwartz (known for works like "Wicked" and "Godspell"), The Prince of Egypt features 10 brand-new songs in addition to 5 cherished tracks from the DreamWorks Animation film, including "When You Believe," "Deliver Us," "All I Ever Wanted," "Through Heaven’s Eyes," and "The Plagues."

The show was filmed a total of three times, with and without an audience, in order to capture close-ups and crane shots. To catch a glimpse of exclusive photos from the filming at the Dominion Theatre, check out our Prince of Egypt photo gallery.

Although no specific release date was provided when the filming plans were initially disclosed in January 2022, it has now been unveiled that the film will have its highly anticipated cinematic premiere on October 19th in select UK cinemas with future international dates to be announced soon. Universal's plan is to initially release the film in specific markets before making it available through home media and streaming platforms.

The film was granted a PG rating by the British Board of Film Classification on August 17th. The rating is due to "mild violence, threat, and upsetting scenes." The film has been cleared for release as a "VOD/Streaming" title by the board and boasts a runtime of 144 minutes.

Further information on cinema locations and exact dates and times will be released in the coming days. Tickets are expected to go on sale September 7th, 2023.

DreamWorks Theatricals, the lead producer of The Prince of Egypt, previously undertook a similar endeavor with their Broadway production of "Shrek the Musical" back in 2009. This earlier venture was released on DVD and Blu-Ray a few years after the show concluded its touring engagements, but it didn't have any theatrical screenings.

The musical, which played its final performance at London’s Dominion Theatre on January 8th, 2022, is not planning a Broadway transfer or further touring productions at this time.

The musical is under the direction of Scott Schwartz, with choreography by Sean Cheesman. The creative team includes set designs by Kevin Depinet, costume designs by Ann Hould-Ward, lighting design by Mike Billings, and sound design by Gareth Owen.

The Prince of Egypt invites audiences to journey through the wonders of Ancient Egypt. The musical weaves the tale of two young men, once raised as brothers in a privileged kingdom, who are now divided by a hidden past. One is destined to rule as Pharaoh, while the other must rise to liberate his true people. Both are bound by a destiny that will shape history for eternity.
