From 'bastard orphan to Washington's right hand man', Hamilton is hit 2015 Broadway production by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Characters like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Eliza Hamilton, and Aaron Burr, are all part of this musical tale of America’s fiery past told through the sounds of today.
The filmed production was produced by RadicalMedia which filmed Hamilton performances in June 2016. The filming consisted of 3 filming days, with only 2 performances being shot in front of a live, paying audience. Most shots that made it to the final film consisted of closeups taken during the first filming day where the show was shot up close, without an audience in its Broadway home.
Disney won the rights to release Hamilton in early 2020, and paid $75 million for the film, which reportedly had a $10 million cost following a bidding war with several movie studios.
While original plans were to release the film in cinemas on October 2021, Disney decided to bring up the release date by one year, and stream the performance on its streaming platform Disney+.
The show was eventually added to the Disney+ platform on July 3rd, 2020 and remains there to this day.
Hamilton holds a near-perfect critics score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and an audience score of 89%.
In her review for Entertainment Weekly, Maureen Lee Lenker said: 'On film, Hamilton feels every bit as fresh, invigorating, intoxicating, and revolutionary as it did when it premiered five years ago'. Brad Newsome for the Sydney Morning herald mentioned: 'Believe the hype. Lin-Manuel Miranda's hip-hop musical about the life of American founding father Alexander Hamilton is a huge achievement, and a hugely entertaining piece of work'.
