Watch Broadway’s Girl From the North Country on PBS Great Performances

Broadway’s Girl From the North Country, the moving musical featuring the songs of Bob Dylan, officially premieres today, May 23, at 9PM ET on PBS as part of the network’s ongoing Great Performances series. The musical is also available to stream on-demand on PBS.org and the PBS app (check local listings).

Originally captured live on Broadway in April 2022, just days before the show’s post-pandemic reopening, this filmed version features the complete original Broadway cast, including Mare Winningham, Todd Almond, Caitlin Houlahan, Jeannette Bayardelle, and Jay O. Sanders. The production was directed for the stage and screen by Conor McPherson, with film direction by Tim van Someren and production by Totally Theatre Productions in association with Runaway Entertainment.

Set in a boarding house in 1934 Duluth, Minnesota, Girl From the North Country tells the story of a group of down-on-their-luck travelers whose paths cross in deeply human, poetic, and heartbreaking ways. The show reimagines more than 20 iconic Bob Dylan songs—including “Forever Young,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” and “Hurricane”—through Tony-winning orchestrations by Simon Hale.

The Broadway production opened just days before the COVID-19 shutdown in March 2020 and later reopened in October 2021. After a temporary closure, the show officially wrapped up its run at the Belasco Theatre on June 19, 2022. This filmed performance captures the cast at the height of its power, with critics and fans alike praising its emotional storytelling and haunting musical interpretations.

The release is part of Great Performances’ “Broadway’s Best” lineup, which kicked off earlier this month with the West End capture of Next to Normal, and will continue with David Henry Hwang’s Yellow Face from Roundabout Theatre Company and the West End revival of Kiss Me, Kate starring Stephanie J. Block. The series is part of The WNET Group’s broader Broadway and Beyond festival, celebrating filmed theater from the U.K. and U.S.

PBS has quickly become a major destination for professionally captured stage works, joining streaming platforms like Disney+ in making Broadway more accessible to audiences at home. Disney Theatrical’s production of Frozen, captured live in London, also announced this week it will premiere on Disney+ this summer. Additionally, Aaron Sorkin’s new play Good Night, and Good Luck is set to be broadcast live from Broadway on CNN in June, in a first-of-its-kind television event.

With its star-studded cast, cinematic visuals, and emotionally resonant score, Girl From the North Country marks another high point in this golden era of filmed theater—an era where even the most intimate moments on stage are being preserved and shared with audiences around the world.
