All Broadway Musicals on DVD and Blu-Ray [2023 UPDATE]

All Broadway Musicals on DVD and Blu-Ray [2023 UPDATE]

Broadway shows on DVD? Isn’t physical media dead? Streaming has certainly made watching our favorite shows at home more convenient - and the reduced distribution costs have enabled production companies to capture many more shows over the years. But owning a physical copy of your favorite show still allows you to watch it whenever you want, without subscription fees or fearing the streamer will take the show down.

This is our annual list of all the Broadway and West End musicals you can now own on DVD and Blu-Ray, updated for 2023. As part of our review, you'll find Tony Award-winning musicals, Broadway exports filmed in the UK, classic favorites that aired on PBS in the '80s, and even intimate off-Broadway productions.

The shows are ordered by release date.

  • Pippin (1981)
  • A classic capture of the original touring production of Pippin, starring Broadway legends Ben Vereen and Chita Rivera. The show was filmed live at the Hamilton Place Theatre in Ontario in what was a replica of the Broadway production.

Television channel Showtime financed the filming, appointing David Sheehan to direct the filming over Bob Fosse, the original director of the Broadway production. Fosse reportedly did not enjoy the finished product and decided to re-edit the final cut to his liking, a cut that was never released publicly (but can sometimes be watched on some video sites online). Either way, the capture is a rare glimpse into Broadway of the 70s, and should be on your watch list.

The original Showtime broadcast of Pippin is available to purchase on DVD!

  • Sophisticated Ladies (1982)
  • One of the first shows to be captured live on Broadway for commercial release, Sophisticated Ladies was captured by Broadway Worldwide (Jekyll and HydePutting it Together) in what was a breakthrough in technology at the time. The musical aired on pay-per-view stations in 1982 and was later released on home media.

The musical made headlines when the entire Broadway cast refused to be featured in the filming, citing fears that the recording would cannibalize ticket sales and leave them out of a job. Producers had to use most of the touring cast in the capture due to the boycott.

You can own Sophisticated Ladies on DVD now.

  • Sunday in the Park with George (1986)
  • Originally filmed for public television in the 80s and serving as an introduction to theater for many Americans, this classic Sondheim musical is based on the known painting of "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte. The live film, done on Broadway towards the end of its run, is one of the most loved captures of all time.

The show features most of its original Broadway cast, including legends Mandy Patinkin as George and Bernadette Peters as Dot / Marie.

You can get Sunday in the Park with George on DVD now.

  • Into the Woods (1991)
  • Currently touring the US in new revival, the original production of Into the Woods was also part of PBS' American Playhouse series, reuniting original stars Bernadette Peters, Chip Zien, and Joanna Gleason for a special filming done shortly after the show closed on Broadway.

The musical was first released on home media in 1997 and then re-released on DVD & Blu-Ray in 2014 thanks to the popularity of the Disney film adaptation.

Into the Woods is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

  • Victor / Victora (1995)
  • The Broadway production of Victor/Victoria was taped specifically for Japanese television in the late '90s starring Julie Andrews reprising her film role on stage.

The show is famously remembered for when Andrews declined her Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical when that was the only one the show received. But don’t let that discourage you from streaming the musical - Andrews is in top form, and the musical numbers are incredibly addicting.

Victor/Victoria starring Julie Andrews is available on DVD and Blu-Ray!

  • Passion (1996)
  • Stephen Sondheim's Passion was a big winner at the 1994 Tony Awards - winning multiple awards including Best Musical. Unfortunately, the critical acclaim and recognition did not help the show to last long on Broadway, and it closed after less than six months.

Shortly after closing, and before loading the set out of the Plymouth Theatre, PBS' American Playhouse filmed the production for television. The musical was later released on VHS and DVD, giving the show new life and exposure to future generations.

While the DVD release is currently out of print, copies can be obtained from third-party sellers.

You can still grab a DVD copy of Stephen Soundheim's Passion.

  • Cats (1998)
  • Andrew Lloyd Webber's original musical was captured live on stage at the Adelphi Theatre in the late 90s, long before the infamous Tom Hopper version. The stage capture is the ultimate document of what Cats was meant to be - a spectacular musical ballet.

The filmed production stars Elaine Paige as Grizabella, John Mills as Gus, Susan Jane Tanner as Jellylorum, and Veerle Casteleyn as Jemima.

The stage production of Cats is available to own on DVD and Blu-Ray from Univeral Studios.

  • Oklahoma! (1999)
  • The Hugh Jackman-led 1999 National Theatre production of Oklahoma! is a perfect capture of the 1999 London revival of the classic Broadway musical. The beloved musical includes Broadway favorites such as Oh What a Beautiful Morning, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, the title classic, and more.

The filmed production originally aired on PBS in 2001, and was released on DVD simultaneously. After acquiring distribution rights, Shout! Factory released a Blu-Ray of the production, making it the first HD release of the musical.

Oklahoma! is available to purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray.

  • Jekyll and Hyde the Musical (2001)
  • The pop Frank Wildhorn musical Jekyll and Hyde played Broadway for more than 1500 performances in the late '90s, gaining a huge fanbase all over the world and multiple international productions. The musical was filmed as part of the short-lived "Broadway Television Network" in the early 2000s, which was an early experiment of having a Broadway-themed pay-per-view station.

Unfortunately, that endeavor did not last long, but this thrilling production of Jekyll and Hyde is one of the few musicals that did get captured for the network. Fans are still upset that the show was captured with the show’s closing leading man (David Hasselhoff), but rumors say he was the one that financed the filming.

Jekyll and Hyde starring David Hasselhoff is now available to own on DVD. A Blu-Ray of the performance is avilable directly from Broadway Worldwide.

  • Putting it Together (2001)
  • Marking the second capture for production company Broadway Worldwide, Putting it Together also marked the exciting return of Carol Burnett to the Broadway stage. Putting it Together is a fun musical revue set to the music of Stephen Sondheim, produced by Cameron Mackintosh.

Musical numbers featured in the show include Sunday in the Park with GeorgeGypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd, Dick Tracy, and West Side Story.

Putting it Together is available to own on DVD!

  • Company (2007)
  • John Doyle’s 2006 classic and elegant revival of Company starring Raúl Esparza was filmed live at Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre for PBS' Great Performances shortly before closing.

While Company attracted many different captures throughout the years (most notably the staged concert with Neil Patrik Harris), this revival uniquely followed Doyle's concept from his production of Sweeney Todd, which had actors playing their own musical instruments.

You can own Raul Esparza's performance of Bobby on DVD now.

  • Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway (2008)
  • Thanks to the terrible reception the 2005 Chris Columbus film had, it was decided to film Rent on stage before it ended its Broadway run in 2008. Rent was captured live by RadicalMedia (Shrek the MusicalHamiltonCome From Away) for Sony Pictures Entertainment's sub-company "The Hot Ticket".

Will Chase, Eden Espinosa, Tracie Thomas, and Adam Kantor star in the filmed version, which includes a special encore with most of the original Broadway cast.

Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway is now available on DVD & Blu-Ray.

  • Memphis the Musical (2010)
  • This Best Musical winner was one of the first Broadway productions to be screened in cinemas while still running on Broadway. In a surprising move, Broadway Worldwide (Jekyll and Hyde the MusicalSmokey Joe's CafePutting it Together) filmed the production nearly ten years after it ceased to film Broadway shows. Unfortunately, the film was not the success the company had hoped for, making it its last production. The musical was released on DVD and Blu-Ray by Shout! Factory.

This musical tells the story of DJ Huey Calhoun, a good old "local boy" with a passion for R&B, and Felicia Farrell, an up-and-coming black singer whom he meets and embarks on a dangerous affair with. As their careers progress, the relationship is challenged by personal ambitions and pressures from the outside world that is still unable to accept their love.

Memphis the Musical is available to purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray.

  • The Phantom of the Opera (2011)
  • Filmed live in London's Royal Albert Hall, this spectacular production features Ramin Karmiloo and Sierra Boggess. While the anniversary celebration does not feature the original Broadway sets, this newly directed version stayed true to the brilliant original and is a good alternative to the 2004 Joel Schumacher flop.

We’re not going to lie, we would still prefer a live capture of the original stage capture, especially now that the Broadway production is closing this year, but this will be the closest document we get to a staged Phantom, it seems.

The Phantom of the Opera, filmed live on stage, is available now on DVD & Blu-Ray.

  • Love Never Dies (2012)
  • After working on a sequel for nearly a decade, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies had an unexpectedly disappointing run in London. Originally set to open in New York at the same time, the show never made the move and instead was produced intimately at Melbourne's Regent Theatre several years later.

Having seen that new production in person, Lloyd Webber loved the fresh take and decided it was the ultimate version of the show he never managed to achieve in London. Not only was this version filmed for posterity (thanks to Universal Studios and Lloyd Webber's production company), but all touring productions of the show were set to copy the changes made in Australia.

Love Never Dies is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray from Universal Studios.

  • Shrek the Musical (2013)
  • Based on the 2001 DreamWorks Animation film, this big-hearted musical took Broadway by storm in 2009 as the most expensive production in theater history. While not a critics favorite, the show failed to gain much momentum on Broadway and closed after less than two years.

RadicalMedia filmed the production before closing feature most of its original Broadway stars, including Sutton FosterBrian d'Arcy JamesChristopher Sieber, and John Tartaglia.

The Broadway musical Shrek is now available to own on physical media.

  • Billy Elliot the Musical (2014)
  • Based on the popular film of the same name, Billy Elliot has music by Elton John and a book by Lee Hall (who also wrote the film's screenplay). The plot tells the story of Billy, a motherless boy who trades his boxing gloves for ballet shoes. His struggle is balanced against the counter-story of the 1984 UK miners' strike.

The musical was filmed in its original London home and broadcast live to cinemas worldwide in 2014. Universal released the musical on home video the same year.

Billy Elliot the Musical is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

  • Miss Saigon (2016)
  • Filmed by possibly one of the greatest production companies for stage musicals, this Steam Motion & Sound production features a cinematic capture of the West End revival. Due to the show opening on Broadway shortly after the London run, the DVD and Blu-Ray were never released in the US, but are available to import through the UK (The Blu-Ray edition is region-free and will play everywhere).

Miss Saigon stands out from the rest of the musicals on this list thanks to its unique cinematic photography that captures the stage production’s essence while giving viewers a movie-like feel. It is no secret that Cameron Mackintosh created this capture as a pitch for a full-blown Miss Saigon film (which never happened), but we’re fine with this version representing the musical for years to come.

  • Holiday Inn: The New Irving Berlin Musical (2017)
  • BroadwayHD's second (and last) live Broadway stream was the Roundabout’s Holiday Inn: The Irving Berlin Musical, captured live in Studio 54 to thousands of viewers all over the world. While it wasn’t well received by critics, the musical is a fun adaptation of the classic film, minus some of its racist parts.

Several years after the live stream and through a special arrangement with Universal Studios, the 75th-anniversary edition of the original 1942 movie included a special bonus disc (both as a DVD and Blu-Ray) featuring the entire filmed musical. Although an 80th-anniversary edition was already released by now, the 75th-anniversary package is still in print and available to purchase (but probably only for a short time).

We'll never forget the magical moment when Holiday Inn began streaming on our screens, live from Studio 54. We also can't forget the technical glitches we've had with the stream. Thankfully, the filmed production is still available in a fully-edited version on DVD and Blu-Ray, serving zero glitches and technical hiccups.

You can still order Holiday Inn on DVD & Blu-Ray through Universal.

  • Les Miserables: The Staged Concert (2019)
  • Following the success of the 25th-anniversary production of The Phantom of the Opera, Cameron Mackintosh produced this semi-staged concert version of Les Miserables when the show had to temporarily vacant it’s London home for renovations. The concert features an all-star cast including Michael Ball, Alfie Boe, Carrie Hope Fletcher, Matt Lucas, and John Owen Jones.

While not fully staged (standing microphones are still present at the front of the stage to ensure everyone is aware it is still a concert), this 2019 production is the closest capture of the stage version to date. Unlike other Les Miserables concerts, such as the 10th Anniversary Concert at the Royal Albert Hall or the25th Anniversary, this time the actors was directed to act the parts, and not just sing their role to the microphone.

Stream Les Miserables now or buy it on physical media!

  • Kinky Boots the Musical (2019)
  • Based on a true story, this Cyndi Lauper-Harvey Fierstein Tony Award-winning musical was filmed in 2019 by Liberator Studios after being filmed in London with original leads Matt Henry and Killian Donnelly that returned to the production for the filming days.

Winner of multiple International awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical, Kinky Boots is a fun and lavish musical by director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell. It is now available to purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray. If you ever feel down, Kinky Boots is the perfect musical to "raise you up"!

You can get Kinky Boots the Musical on DVD & Blu-Ray.

  • The Spongebob Musical (2019)
  • In a unique move, entertainment giant Nickelodeon filmed The Spongebob Musical long after it closed on Broadway after shipping most of the cast and crew from Broadway to the UK. The show was recreated at the Theatre Royal Plymouth and featured most of the original Broadway sets, although it was certainly not a replica production.

The resulting film aired on Nickelodeon in an edited form and later was released to streaming and DVD. Due to the incredible demand for the physical release of the show, Nickelodeon released the musical on Blu-Ray several months later.

While not featuring the complete set from Broadway's Palace Theatre, the live capture fully documents the essence of the original show. The DVD release contains the entire show together with the Sing-along version that aired on Nickelodeon.

The SpongeBob Musical is now available on DVD & Blu-Ray.

  • 42nd Street (2019)
  • The critically acclaimed London revival of 42nd Street was filmed live in 2019 by Liberator Studios, capturing one of the West End’s biggest productions ever. Liberator released the show on DVD and Blu-Ray on June 7, 2021, making it the first time a complete production of the musical was available to own (apart from the beloved 1933 classic).

This extravagant production is one of the biggest and most expensive-looking productions we have in our database. A near-replica of the 2001 Broadway revival, the production stars Bonnie Langford, Clare Halse, and Philip Bertioli.

You can get 42nd Street on DVD & Blu-Ray now.

  • Ruthless! The Musical (2019)
  • The hilarious off-Broadway musical was filmed live at London's Arts Theatre and released on DVD last year. Ruthless! began its journey Off-Broadway nearly 30 years ago and famously spoofed Broadway classics from Gypsy to Mame as well as iconic films such as All About Eve.

This live capture from Liberator Films stars West End superstar Tracie Bennett in a performance that is not to be missed!

You can own the recording of Ruthless! on DVD now.

  • Hetty Feather (2020)
  • Filmed by Liberator Films in 2020, Jacqueline Wilson's best-selling novel comes to life in an imaginative musical about a feisty young orphan that embarks on an adventure to find her true home.

The show premiered at the Rose Theatre in Kingston and later transferred to the Vaudeville Theatre in the West End. Liberator Films released the show on DVD earlier this year.

You can now purchase Hetty Feather on DVD.

    • American Utopia (2020)
    • Filmed live at Broadway's Hudson Theatre, this critically acclaimed Broadway concert features Award-winning musician Byrne (Talking Heads) and a company of 11 musicians performing Byrne's music from his 2018 album of the same name.

HBO acquired the distribution rights for the filming and added the concert to HBO MAX quickly after. The physical media release was handled by Dogwoof Studios, who produced the filming.

American Utopia is a must-watch for Byrne's fans and music enthusiasts. If you enjoyed Spike Lee's Passing Strange, you probably want to catch this one.

Get American Utopia on DVD and Blu-Ray!

    • John and Jen (2023)
    • John & Jen offers an intimate look at the complexities of familial relationships in a changing America. Set in 1985 and 2005, the musical follows brother and sister John and Jen, born seven years apart but entirely inseparable.

Filmed in the summer of 2021 at the Southwark Playhouse in London, the worldwide premiere of the new production stars Olivier Award-nominee Rachel Tucker (Come From Away, Wicked) and Lewis Cornay (The Book of Mormon).

John and Jen will be released on DVD early next year.

    • Anything Goes (2023)
    • Filmed live at the Barbican in London, the recent revival of Broadway's Anything Goes starring Sutton Foster will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray by Liberator Film Studios in March.

As the S.S. American heads to sea, etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set a course to true love. But destiny needs a little help from singing sailors, comical disguises, and good old-fashioned blackmail.

The filmed production reunited director Kathleen Marshall together with Sutton Foster, who worked together on the musical's 2011 Broadway revival. Joining Foster are Robert Lindsay, Felicity Kendal, and Gary Wilmot.

Anything Goes will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray next March.

    • Heathers the Musical (2023)
    • A fan favorite, Heathers the Musical is based on the cult classic film that became a hit long after its cinema release in the late 80s. After multiple workshops, the team behind such hits as “Legally Blonde the Musical” and “Bat Boy” opened the show Off-Broadway in 2014 but failed to gain much momentum. Just like the film the musical is based on, the show gained its popularity in later years thanks to bootleg recordings of the musical that surfaced online.

There are many similarities between the London production and the original 2014 Off-Broadway incarnation - although this version feels much more polished and complete. Filmed in May 2022 at the show’s original London home, it does not feature the original West End cast (which starred Carrie Hope Fletcher), which might be a good decision on the producer’s part. Ailsa Davidson shines in the role of Veronica and makes this capture a complete joy to watch.

If you enjoyed Laurence O'Keefe’s other musicals, such as Legally Blonde and Bat Boy, you’ll love Heathers. Filled with dark humor and catchy songs, the musical is still running strong in London and recently launched its second UK tour.

Get Heathers the Musical on DVD and Blu-Ray now!

What about more shows on physical media? We think both Hamilton and Come From Away are great candidates for a home media release.
