The SpongeBob Musical (2019)
SpongeBob SquarePants is the musical adaptation of Nickelodeon’s hit animated series. The undersea city of Bikini Bottom, inhabited by the ever-optimistic yellow sea sponge SpongeBob SquarePants and his equally quirky circle of friends and neighbors.
SpongeBob’s pleasant existence is abruptly interrupted when he finds out the volcano Mt. Humongous will erupt within the next 48 hours and completely destroy Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob, trying to prove to the world that he is not 'just a simple sponge,' tries to save the day when everybody else has given up.
The musical, which originally closed on Broadway in September 2018 was unusually filmed more than a year later after closing in the UK, with most of the Broadway cast returning to the filmed production.
This was partly to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the SpongeBob Squarepants. The musical was remounted at the Plymouth Theatre in the UK in November 2019 and aired just a month later on Nickelodeon. The set for the filmed production was reconstructed and featured a simpler design to that of the full Broadway production that played the Palace Theatre.
The show was later released on both DVD & Blu-Ray from Nickelodeon and is available on various streaming platforms.
