American Utopia (2020)
A filmed version of David Byrne's Broadway show, a unifying musical celebration that inspires audiences to connect to each other and to the global community.
The show originally opened on Broadway in October 2019 at the Hudson Theatre and later re-opened in December 2021 for a second limited engagement.
The Broadway concert features Academy, Grammy and Golden Globe Award-winning musician Byrne (Talking Heads), together with 11 musical artists performing songs from Byrne's 2018 album of the same name.
RadicalMedia (Hamilton, Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway, Shrek the Musical) produced this Spike Lee-directed film. Spike Lee is not stranger to Broadway, having filmed the Broadway production of Passing Strange in 2008.
Participant, a social media company dedicated to engagement toward positive social change, is the lead financier and executive producer for the film, together with River Road Entertainment and Warner Music Group.
HBO bought the rights to the broadcast and featured the film as part of its HBO Max subscription. The show is now available to purchase on home media.
