Come from Away is a Canadian musical with book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. It is set in the week following the September 11 attacks and tells the true story of what transpired when 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly in the small town of Gander in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, as part of Operation Yellow Ribbon. The characters in the musical are based on (and in most cases share the names of) real Gander residents as well as some of the 7,000 stranded travelers they housed and fed.
Production company eOne (Entertainment One) was originally planning on creating a movie adaptation of the Broadway musical, but later decided to film the stage production instead - with speculations citing budget reasons.
The show was eventually filmed in the middle of the Broadway shutdown in May 2021 in front of an invited audience of 9/11 survivors and frontline workers by production company RadicalMedia, known for their work on Disney's Hamilton and Dreamworks' Shrek the Musical.
The cast featured some of the original La Jolla cast, and invited back Jen Colella (Beverley/Annette & Others) which already left the production at the time of filming.
Eventually, Apple TV+ purchased the rights to the live filming from eOne and released the filmed musical worldwide on September 10, 2021.
The filmed production received a critics score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes with Brian Lowry for CNN saying "Come From Away delivers a best-seat-in-the-house view, offering a moving, brilliantly shot and staged spectacle that brings that moment unerringly back to life."
