Streaming has certainly made watching filmed Broadway musicals at home more convenient - and the reduced distribution costs have enabled production companies to capture many more shows over the years. Although streaming platforms definitely make our lives easier, owning a physical copy of your favorite show is an opportunity to watch it whenever you want, without any subscription fees or the fear the content will be taken down by a streamer. This is our annual list of all the Broadway and West End musicals you can now own on DVD and Blu-Ray, updated for 2022. As part of our review, you'll find Tony Award-winning musicals, Broadway exports filmed in the UK, classic favorites that aired on PBS in the '80s, and even intimate off-Broadway productions. Filmed live in 2019 at Broadway's Hudson Theatre, this critically acclaimed Broadway concert features Award-winning musician Byrne (Talking Heads) and a company of 11 musicians performing songs from Byrne's 2018 album of the same name. HBO acquired the distribution rights for the filming and added the concert to streaming platform HBO MAX. The physical media release was handled by Dogwoof Studios, who produced the filming. Unlike any other filmed performance on our list, American Utopia is a must-see for Byrne's fans. If you enjoyed Spike Lee's Passing Strange, you probably want to catch this capture. The London revival of 42nd Street was filmed live in 2019 by Liberator Film Services and later released on both DVD and Blu-Ray on June 7, 2021, making it the first time a complete production of the musical was available to own (apart from the beloved 1933 classic). This extravagant production is one of the biggest and most expensive-looking productions we have in our database. A near-replica of the 2001 Broadway revival, the production stars Bonnie Langford, Clare Halse, and Philip Bertioli. You can get 42nd Street on DVD & Blu-Ray now. In a unique move, entertainment giant Nickelodeon filmed The Spongebob Musical long after it closed on Broadway in 2018. Shipping most of the cast and crew from Broadway to the UK, the show was recreated at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. The resulting film aired on Nickelodeon in several different versions (Full, edited, and sing-along) and later was released to streaming and DVD. Due to the incredible demand for the show on DVD, Nickelodeon released the musical on Blu-Ray in later months. While not featuring the complete set from Broadway's Palace Theatre, the live capture documents the show in full. The DVD release contains the full show together with the Sing-along version that aired on Nickelodeon. The SpongeBob Musical is now available on DVD & Blu-Ray. This Tony Award-winning musical, which recently closed off-Broadway, is available to purchase on DVD & Blu-Ray. Based on a true story, this Cyndi Lauper-Harvey Fierstein Tony Award-winning musical was filmed in 2019 by Liberator Films after being filmed in London with original leads Matt Henry and Killian Donnelly that specifically returned to the production for the filming days. If you ever feel down, Kinky Boots is the perfect musical to "raise you up"! You can get Kinky Boots the Musical on DVD & Blu-Ray. Following the success of the 25th-anniversary production of The Phantom of the Opera, Cameron Mackintosh produced this staged concert version of Les Miserables featuring Michael Ball, Alfie Boe, Carrie Hope Fletcher, Matt Lucas, and John Owen Jones. While not fully staged, this 2019 version is the closest capture of the stage version of Les Miserables to date. Previous concerts that are also available on DVD include Les Miserables 10th Anniversary Concert at the Royal Albert Hall and Les Miserables in Concert The 25th Anniversary. BroadwayHD's second (and last) live airing from Broadway was Holiday Inn: The Irving Berlin Musical, captured from Studio 54 to thousands of viewers all over the world. Several years after the live airing and through a special agreement with Universal Studios, the 75th-anniversary edition of the original 1942 movie included a special bonus disc (both as a DVD and Blu-Ray) featuring the entire filmed musical. We'll never forget the magical moment when Holiday Inn began streaming on our screens, live from Studio 54. We also can't forget the technical glitches we've had with the stream. Thankfully, the filmed production is still available in a fully-edited version on DVD and Blu-Ray. You can still order Holiday Inn on DVD & Blu-Ray through Universal. Filmed by Steam Motion & Sound (Waitress on Broadway, Aladdin the Musical, The Phantom of the Opera), this unique filmed production features a cinematic capture of the West End revival. Due to the show opening on Broadway shortly after the London run, the DVD & Blu-Ray were never released in the US, but are available to import through the UK (The Blu-Ray edition is region-free). Miss Saigon stands out from the rest of the musicals on this list thanks to its unique cinematic photography that manages to capture the essence of the stage production while giving viewers a movie-like feel. Get Miss Saigon: the 25th anniversary on DVD & Blu-Ray. Filmed live in London's Royal Albert Hall, this spectacular production features Ramin Karmiloo and Sierra Boggess. While the anniversary celebration does not feature the original Phantom sets, this newly directed version stayed true to the brilliant original and is a good alternative to the 2004 Joel Schumacher flop. The Phantom of the Opera, filmed on stage, is available now on DVD & Blu-Ray. After working on a sequel for nearly a decade, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies had an unexpectedly short run in London. Originally set to open on Broadway at the same time, the show never made the move and instead was produced intimately at Melbourne's Regent Theatre several years later. Having seen the production in person, Lloyd Webber absolutely loved the Australian take and decided it was the ultimate version of the show. Not only was this version filmed for posterity (thanks to Universal Studios and Lloyd Webber's production company), but all touring productions of the show were set to copy the changes made in Australia. Love Never Dies is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray from Universal Studios. This Best Musical winner was one of the first Broadway productions to be screened in cinemas while still playing on the Broadway stage. The musical was filmed by Broadway Worldwide (Jekyll and Hyde the Musical, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Putting it Together) and was released on DVD and Blu-Ray by Shout! Factory. This musical tells the story of DJ Huey Calhoun, a good old "local boy" with a passion for R&B, and Felicia Farrell, an up-and-coming black singer whom he meets and embarks on a dangerous affair with. As their careers progress, the relationship is challenged by personal ambitions and pressures from the outside world that is still unable to accept their love. Memphis the Musical is available to purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray. In its final weeks on Broadway, Rent was captured live by RadicalMedia (Shrek the Musical, Hamilton, Come From Away) as part of Sony Pictures Entertainment's new initiative "The Hot Ticket". Will Chase, Eden Espinosa, Tracie Thomas, and Adam Kantor star in the filmed version, which includes a special encore with most of the original Broadway cast. Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway is now available on DVD & Blu-Ray. A classic capture of the original production of Pippin, starring Broadway legends Ben Vereen and Chita Rivera. The show was filmed live on tour at the Hamilton Place Theatre in Ontario. Television channel Showtime financed the filming, appointing David Sheehan to direct the filming over Bob Fosse who directed the stage production. Fosse reportedly did not enjoy the finished product and decided to re-edit the final cut to his liking, a cut that was never released publicly. Either way, the capture is a rare glimpse into Broadway of the 70s, and should definitely be on your watch list. The original Showtime broadcast of Pippin is available to purchase on DVD! Sophisticated Ladies was one of the first Broadway musicals to be broadcast live to television audiences, thanks to Broadway Worldwide (Jekyll and Hyde, Putting it Together). The show aired on PPV in 1982 and was later released on home media. You can own Sophisticated Ladies on DVD now. Originally filmed for public television in the '80s, this classic Sondheim musical based on the painting of "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte" is one of the most loved captured musicals of all time. The show stars Broadway legends Mandy Patinkin as George and Bernadette Peters as Dot / Marie. You can get Sunday in the Park with George on DVD now. Currently playing on Broadway in new revival, the original production of Into the Woods was also part of PBS' American Playhouse series, reuniting original stars Bernadette Peters, Chip Zien, and Joanna Gleason for the filming. The musical was first released on home media in 1997 and then re-released on DVD & Blu-Ray in 2014 following the Disney film adaptation. Into the Woods is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray. The Broadway production of Victor/Victoria was taped specifically for Japanese television in the late '90s starring Julie Andrews reprising her film role on stage. The show is famously remembered for when Andrews declined the her Tony Award nomination for Best Actress when that was the only one the show received. Victor/Victoria starring Julie Andrews is available on DVD and Blu-Ray! Stephen Sondheim's Passion was a big winner at the 1994 Tony Awards - winning major awards including Best Musical. Unfortunently, the critical acclaim and awards did not help the show to last long on Broadway, and it closed after less than 6 months. Shortly after closing, and before loading out the set out of the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, PBS' American Playhouse filmed the production for television. The musical was later released on VHS and DVD, giving the show new life and exposure to generations to come. While the DVD release is currently out of print, copies can be obtained from third party sellers. You can still grab a DVD copy of Stephen Soundheim's Passion. Andrew Lloyd Webber's original musical was captured live on stage at the Adelphi Theatre in the late 90s, long before the infamous Tom Hopper version. Thanks to the stage capture, starring Elaine Paige as Grizabella, we have the ultimate document of what Cats really wanted to achieve on stage - a spectacular musical ballet. The stage production of Cats is available to own on DVD and Blu-Ray from Univeral Studios. The Hugh Jackman-led 1999 filmed production of Oklahoma! is a perfect capture of the National Theatre's London revival of the classic Broadway musical. The beloved show includes Broadway classics such as Oh What a Beautiful Morning, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, the title classic, and more. The musical originally aired on PBS in 2001, and released on DVD at the same time. After acquiring distribution rights, Shout! Factory released a Blu-Ray of the production. Oklahoma! is available to purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray. The horror Frank Wildhorn musical Jekyll and Hyde played Broadway for more than 1500 performances in the late '90s, gaining a huge fanbase all over the world. The musical was filmed as part of the short-lived "Broadway Television Network" in the early 2000s, which was an early experiment of having a Broadway-themed pay-per-view station. Unfortunately, that endeavor did not last long but this thrilling production of Jekyll and Hyde is one of the few musicals that did get captured for the network. Jekyll and Hyde starring David Hasselhoff is now available to own on DVD. A Blu-Ray of the performance is avilable directly from Broadway Worldwide. Marking the exciting return of Carol Burnett to the Broadway stage, Putting it Together was a Cameron Mackintosh musical revue set to the music of Stephen Sondheim. Musical numbers featured in the show include Sunday in the Park with George, Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sweeney Todd, Dick Tracy, and West Side Story. Putting it Together is available to own on DVD! John Doyle’s 2006 classic and elegant revival of Company starring Raúl Esparza was filmed live at Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre for PBS' Great Performances shortly before closing. While Company attracted many different captures throughout the years (most notably the staged concert with Neil Patrik Harris), this revival uniquely followed Doyle's concept from his production of Sweeney Todd, which had actors playing their own musical instruments. You can own Raul Esparza's performance of Bobby on DVD now. Based on the 2001 DreamWorks Animation film, this big-hearted musical took Broadway by storm in 2009 as the most expensive production in theater history. RadicalMedia filmed the musical for featuring Broadway stars Sutton Foster, Brian d'Arcy James, Christopher Sieber, and John Tartaglia. The Broadway musical Shrek is now available to own on physical media. Based on the popular film of the same name, Billy Elliot has music by Elton John and a book by Lee Hall (who wrote the film's screenplay). The plot tells the story of Billy, a motherless boy who trades his boxing gloves for ballet shoes. His personal struggle is balanced against the counter-story of the 1984 UK miners' strike. The Broadway and West End musical was filmed in London and broadcast live to cinemas in 2014. Universal released the musical on home video the same year. Billy Elliot the Musical is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray. Filmed live at the Barbican in London, the recent revival of Broadway's Anything Goes starring Sutton Foster will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray by Liberator Film Studios next year. As the S.S. American heads to sea, etiquette and convention head out the portholes as two unlikely pairs set a course to true love. But destiny needs a little help from singing sailors, comical disguises, and good old-fashioned blackmail. The filmed production reunited director Kathleen Marshall together with Sutton Foster, who worked together on the musical's 2011 Broadway revival. Joining Foster are Robert Lindsay, Felicity Kendal, and Gary Wilmot. Anything Goes will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray next March. Filmed by Liberator Films in 2020, Jacqueline Wilson's best-selling novel comes to life in an imaginative musical about a feisty young orphan that embarks on an adventure to find her true home. The show premiered at the Rose Theatre in Kingston and later transferred to the Vaudeville Theatre in the West End. Liberator Films released the show on DVD earlier this year. You can now purchase Hetty Feather on DVD. The hilarious off-Broadway musical was filmed live at London's Arts Theatre and released on DVD last year. Ruthless! began its journey Off-Broadway nearly 30 years ago and famously spoofs Broadway classics from Gypsy to Mame as well as iconic films such as All About Eve. This live capture from Liberator Films stars West End superstar Tracie Bennett in a performance that is not to be missed! You can own the recording of Ruthless! on DVD now. John & Jen offers an intimate look at the complexities of familial relationships in a changing America. Set in both 1985 and 2005, the musical follows brother and sister John & Jen who were born seven years apart but are completely inseparable. Filmed in the summer of 2021 at the Southwark Playhouse in London, the worldwide premiere of the new production stars Olivier Award-nominee Rachel Tucker (Come From Away, Wicked) and Lewis Cornay (The Book of Mormon). And what about more shows coming out on physical media? We think both Hamilton and Come From Away are great candidates for a home media release.
