SIX Upcoming Musical Pro-Shots We're Most Excited For
It's been an incredible couple of years for professional recordings of musical theater, or as we call them, pro-shots. With nearly 200 productions that are now already available to buy/stream online, there are still several productions that are awaiting release. Today, we take a look at SIX of these productions and try to figure out when each should be released. These are the pro-shots we're most excited for: Originating at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley in 2017, this new and significantly revised production of The Prince of Egypt opened at London's Dominion Theatre in February 2020 with Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (most of the score was written for the stage), and direction by Schwartz's son Scott Schwartz. The production initially was set up to play a 39-week limited engagement, but we all know what happened next. The multi-million dollar musical had to shut down a month after opening, only to reopen July 1st, 2021. Unfortunately, the musical did not manage to pick up needed momentum after reopening and was forced to close several months later. With the musical not expected to tour due to its elaborate sets, Dreamworks/Universal decided to film the production before it leaves the West End. The filming was produced by STEAM Motion and Sound (Heathers: The Musical, Kinky Boots, Newsies The Broadway Musical) and is currently in post-production. While no official release date has been announced from Universal, it is expected to be out early next year. The Tony Award-winning Girl From The North Country was filmed at Broadway's Belasco Theatre in April just a week before reopening. The Broadway production had the unfortunate timing of opening in March 2020, which cause the production to quickly shut down. The musical debuted at London's Old Vic in 2017, transferring to New York's Public Theatre the following year. In Girl, the songs of Bob Dylan receive a hunting treatment in a complex and dramatic plot which makes this filming an unusual piece in the collection of musical comedies we're used to. Stage producers for North Country filmed the production without announcing any concrete release plans, but are expected to announce more details on the future of the recording later next year. The North American tour of the production will launch in Fall of 2023. "It's not a comeback, it's a return!" - BroadwayHD is returning to film Broadway musicals and we're super excited they managed to reach an agreement to capture the recent production of Mr. Saturday Night with Billy Crystal. Falsettos in 2017 was the last Broadway musical the streaming platform managed to capture on Broadway. The musical, which also stars Broadway favorite Shoshana Bean, was filmed right before closing this past August. Although the musical did not run for long, it was recognized with 5 Tony nominations (including one for Best Musical) and we're just happy to see a big-budget commercial Broadway production managing to reach agreements with all unions to receive proper filming. Although no release date has been revealed at this time, past releases typically had a 3-month post-production period, which could mean we will see the recording before the end of the year. That could all change depending on BroadwayHD's schedules and priorities, as we've seen with Fame, Space Dogs, and the recently delayed Broken Wings the Musical. After the huge success of Newsies: The Broadway Musical, Disney filmed Aladdin back in 2019. But what happened to that recording? We've recently talked in length about the upcoming pro-shot of Disney's Aladdin and the history behind that long-awaited recording. Originally set for release in 2020, the capture has been delayed multiple times. Disney gathered an international all-star cast for the live capture, which happened right after the show closed in London's Prince Edward Theatre. While the cast did hint in recent interviews about the upcoming Disney+ release, it was director Brett Sullivan that mentioned the film's latest release date, currently set for 2022. Will Aladdin finally be out this holiday season? Hopefully our wish will be granted this time. One of the most anticipated recordings of the year (we think our readers would agree!) is the filmed staged concert of Bonnie and Clyde, starring original cast member Jeremy Jordan. While the original production ran on Broadway for just one month, the musical gained a huge fan following over the years and has now been captured forever. We recently revealed that producers Fourth Wall Live are aiming to release the filmed capture at the end of this year, along with the filmed concert of Jeremy Jordan at Theatre Royal Drury Lane. While we were initially disappointed Laura Osnes did not fly over to film the role she originated, Frances Mayli Mccann (Heathers the Musical) did such a terrific job playing Bonnie we're sure everyone would be just as excited to watch her on screen. Unlike other filmed concerts (Les Miserables, we're looking at you), the production was captured with full direction, props, and set. All these (and Jeremy Jordan, of course) make us count the hours until Bonnie and Clyde is released. For five, four, three, two, one more minute... it's the professional filming of SIX that we are most anticipating! The hit West End and Broadway musical-concert was filmed in July by the original stage producers for a future release. What we're most excited about is the return of the original London cast, which rarely happens with pro-shots of long runners. The cast took over London's Vaudeville Theatre for a full week when performances were temporarily suspended and filmed the show in the closed theater (concluding with two performances with an invited audience). Based on clips from filming days, it sure looks like this will be one amazing capture, directed by Liz Clare who worked on big-scale live concerts such as Adele - Live at the London Palladium. With the success the musical is seeing all over the world, it is likely producers will hold onto the recording for a while before releasing it to the public, Hamilton-style. While we wait for all these exciting recordings, check out what's already available to stream right now.1. The Prince of Egypt
