Newsies The Broadway Musical (2017)
The rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged 'newsies,' who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. When publishing titans raise distribution prices at the newsboys' expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike and take a stand for what's right.
Newsies represents the first Disney Theatrical production to be filmed and released commercially. The musical was captured in partnership with Fathom Events and released to cinemas in the US and UK.
The musical was filmed during special performances in September 2016 at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, which was originally a planned stop of the US tour.
The film was ultimately released to cinemas in February of 2017 and became the highest grossing Broadway capture at the time. As a result, multiple encore screenings were held in 2017 and 2018.
While originally being available to stream on Netflix, the film became a Disney Plus exclusive as soon as the company launched its streaming platform.
