Currently Playing Broadway Musicals You Can Also Stream at Home
Thanks to recent Broadway hits that have gone the streaming route, the old notion that pro-shots discourage people from attending live productions is long gone. These days, theatergoers can watch a Broadway musical at night and stream the same (or similar) performance from their couch at home the next morning. Today we're looking at our favorite Broadway and West End musicals you can both watch live on stage right now, or stream from home. While some of these productions have not been released yet, all were filmed for public distribution. Here are the musicals you can now watch both on stage, and off: The filmed performance we can all thank for launching the recent pro-shot renaissance. Secretly filmed at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2016, the creatives did not initially know where the final product may end up. When a bidding war led one entertainment giant to pay more than $70 million for the streaming rights of the pro-shot, it was an easy decision for producers to agree to release the show while it was still playing around the world. There is no doubt that it is thanks to Hamilton that other producers felt more comfortable filming their shows for release, seeing how a blockbuster presented by seasoned producers on Broadway is making the leap to streaming while still playing on stage. While the original production recently closed on Broadway, the London transfer of Come From Away is still playing and was even awarded the Olivier Award for Best Musical in 2019. Producers eOne originally planned to make a film version of Come From Away, but the success of Hamilton and the ongoing pandemic quickly changed those plans. eOne captured the show during the Broadway shutdown in 2021 with most of the original Broadway cast. The filmed production was released on Apple TV+ and is now available globally. Although it was definitely the Hamilton pro-shot that opened the door to many great filmed productions in recent years, it was The Phantom of the Opera, filmed live in 2012, that proved that even a long-runner can release a professional recording without ticket sales dipping. The incredible performances of Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess make this pro-shot an incredible watch to this day, and perhaps one of the best Phantom casts we've ever witnessed, both on and off stage. Stream The Phantom of the Opera. Now playing on Broadway in a staged concert form, Into the Woods is widely available in multiple versions online. From the classic (and our absolute favorite) filmed-for-PBS original Broadway production, shot in 1991, to the recent UK revival starring Hannah Waddingham. Don't miss Into the Woods to experience what was Broadway like in the late '80s. Ah, the anticipated filmed production of Aladdin is still awaiting release, but as revealed earlier this month, it is most likely to be released later this year. The Broadway production is still going strong at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre, even though the West End production (which was filmed back in 2019) closed to make way for another Disney hit, Mary Poppins. Aladdin: The Broadway Musical release date is TBD. The Broadway and West End hit musical Jersey Boys was filmed last year in a special made-for-streaming production in Cleveland, Ohio. With Jersey Boys currently enjoying a new West End revival in London's Trafalgar Theatre, the production was helmed by original Broadway director Des McAnuff and stars Nick Joans in the role of Frankie Valli, together with Broadway star Andy Karl as Tommy Devito, and Michael Urie as Bob Crewe. Jersey Boys Live! release date is TBD. The huge West End hit Heathers the Musical is still playing to sold-out crowds at London's The Other Palace Theatre while being available to stream freely through The Roku Channel in the US and Canada. Originating in the US, the show played off-Broadway in 2014 and was initially not a huge success. After workshopping the musical in the UK, the show became the huge hit it is today, and returned multiple times to the West End. Due to the success of the UK version, it was decided to share the latest incarnation with US audiences to generate interest in future productions of the show. The show was filmed earlier this year at The Other Palace with a cast specifically assembled for the filming. It is still awaiting an international release. Heathers is expected to tour the UK next year. While a fully staged production of Les Miserables was never professionally filmed, we've been blessed with not one, but three staged concerts that each captured the show in a different state over the years. The original 10th-anniversary concert features some of the original London cast and the original untouched London score, while the latest "Les Miserables: The Staged Concert" features the re-orchestrated modern score along with a terrific cast featuring musical duo Michael Ball and Alfie Boe. Not many would know that the much talked about Broadway revival of Funny Girl, currently starring Lea Michele, is based on the 2015 Menier Chocolate Factory revival with Sheridan Smith. The hugely successful London production played the Savoy Theatre and later went on a UK tour with the original star. The tour was then professionally filmed by Digital Theatre and is now available to stream. The London production was directed by Michael Mayer, who also directed the current Broadway revival of the show.
