Disney Releases Trevor the Musical - Is Broadway’s Aladdin Next?

Disney+ announced last month that off-Broadway's "Trevor: The Musical", produced for the screen by RadicalMedia, will debut on the streaming platform Friday, June 24.

Filmed in November 2021 just before closing off-Broadway, it's been a quick release for Disney, which raises the question - what's happening with the release of the filmed West End production of Aladdin that was scheduled to debut on Disney+ two years ago?

Let's investigate.

First things first - Trevor: The Musical enjoyed a short off-Broadway run late last year, opening November 10 and closing the following month after just 60 performances.

It's always a surprise when a little-known production receives such a big distribution deal - and one that is produced by one of the leading production companies in the pro-shot world. RadicalMedia is behind major projects such as the Broadway productions of Come From Away, Hamilton, and American Utopia.

According to the press release, the musical follows "a charming 13-year-old on a turbulent journey of self-discovery". "After an embarrassing incident at school, Trevor must summon the courage to forge his own path." The musical features a 19-member company.

We love seeing Disney finance more pro-shots, following their huge win with Hamilton, but what about a show they've already filmed years ago for release, Aladdin: The Broadway Musical?

The show was filmed right before closing in the West End by Steam Motion & Sound, another great production company that filmed such hits as Kinky Boots, Newsies the Musical, The Phantom of the Opera, and the upcoming Waitress on Broadway and The Prince of Egypt.

Disney made a huge deal out of the filming, which was going to be their first release of a West End production, and invited cast members from all over the world to participate in a week-long filming process at the Prince Edwards Theatre. The week concluded with a special invite-only performance in front of a live audience.

The musical was originally scheduled to be released in 2020, but we all know what happened that year. In fact, plans were pretty much finalized for Disney to release the show in the 2020 holiday season. Assets for the production were created, trailers were made, and Apple TV even did us a favor and accidentally leaked the poster for the filmed production, which clearly had "2020" marked on it.

So is Aladdin: The Broadway Musical still coming to Disney+? Yes, we believe it is. While the musical was indeed originally scheduled for a 2020 release, the digital giant had to constantly adapt and change release dates due to the ongoing pandemic.

When Aladdin's filming began in 2019, Disney had no idea they were going to win the rights for Hamilton (not to mention bumping the release to 2020), pushing lots of musical content around.

A number of sharp-eyed readers also noticed that Brett Sullivan, co-found of Steam Motion & Sound and Director of Aladdin: The Broadway Musical has an expected release date for the pro-shot on his Wikipedia page - "2022". [Update: The release date has been removed earlier today, but make sure to check those historical edits!]
