Original Production of War Horse Now Streams Worldwide

The National Theatre's London production of "War Horse," recorded live at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, is now streaming globally for the first time!

The live capture, which was previously screened around the world as part of the National Theatre's "National Theatre Live" program, will now be available to stream online thanks to the NTatHome platform.

War Horse opened on Broadway in March 2011 and quickly became a huge hit after receiving rave reviews from New York critics. The play went on to win five Tony Awards, including Best Play.

Here's how to stream War Horse now:

Based on the Michael Morpurgo novel, War Horse takes audiences on a journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of France during World War I. Filled with haunting music, this moving and imaginative drama is a display of phenomenal art and inventiveness.

The play features multiple life-size puppets by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, and charging horses to life on stage.

The capture was filmed live during the play's original West End run back in 2014, as part of The National Theatre's NTLive program. The program is now available to stream globally through the National Theatre's streaming platform. This is the first time the filmed play will be widely available to stream worldwide.

The Broadway and West End hit Leopoldstadt was also recently added to the NTatHome platform and can be streamed now in select markets.

"War Horse" tells the story of a young boy named Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who has been recruited to fight for the English in World War I. Caught in enemy crossfire, Joey ends up serving on both sides during the war before landing in no man's land, while Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home.

Since its first performance at the National Theatre in 2007, "War Horse" has become an international phenomenon, seen by over 7.5 million people worldwide and receiving numerous awards, including two Olivier Awards in London, and five Tony Awards on Broadway.

The National Theatre launched NTatHome in 2020 as an on-demand streaming service featuring a number of productions filmed as part of its National Theatre Live program. The captures in the platform include: Tom Hiddleston's Coriolanus, Medea with Helen McCrory, Mosquitos with Olivia Colman, and Amadeus, starring Adam Gillen and Lucian Msamati.
