Kinky Boots Film, Basis for the Broadway Musical, Streams Free This Month

Kinky Boots, the 2005 British film that is the basis for the Broadway musical of the same name (that can also be streamed online), has been released for free streaming by Pluto TV.

Similarly to the stage production, the film follows Charlie Price, who tries to save his family's shoe business from imminent bankruptcy by hiring an unlikely new consultant: a fabulous drag queen whose creative style and wild designs are a breath of fresh air in the stuffy old factory.

Here's how to watch 2005's Kinky Boots film this month:

Pluto TV has now released the film for free streaming for the month of December. The film will be available in the United States and Canada for the next 30 days only. A direct link has been added to our list of free streaming musicals.

The musical version of Kinky Boots started its journey in Chicago in 2012, 7 years after the premiere of the film, and quickly made its Broadway debut the following year. On Broadway, the musical managed to earn 13 Tony award nominations, which later translated into 6 wins, including Best Actor for Billy Porter and Best Musical. In 2015, the musical opened in the West End and won three Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical. The musical was filmed and can now be streamed online.

In his review for Variety, Derek Elley said: "Still, the picture never drags. Full complement of standard subplots includes plenty of character color from the femme workforce. Switch to Milan in the final reels gives pic a visual boost, and an upbeat coda, set to “Yes Sir I Can Boogie,” delivers the full monty. Production values are high throughout, with working-class life in Northampton never looking so good, given the Miramax sheen. Widescreen photography by Eigil Bryld is rich-toned and well composed, and Adrian Johnston’s score smoothly decorates the whole cake."
