Classic Film Damn Yankees Streams Free This Week

The 1958 film adaptation of the Broadway hit "Damn Yankees" will be streaming all week for free!

Adapted from George Abbott and Douglass Wallop's book of the 1955 Broadway musical (which is based on the 1954 novel "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant"), the film was released shortly after Richard Adler and Jerry Ross' success with The Pajama Game.

The film version features most of the principal cast of the original Broadway production - including Gwen Verdon as Lola, Tab Hunter as Joe Hardy, Ray Walston as Applegate, Russ Brown as Benny Van Buren, and Shannon Bolin as Mrs. Meg Boyd.

Here's how to stream Damn Yankees this weekend:

Damn Yankees is a sports comedy, and a modern retelling of the Faust legend (a tale of one who makes a pact with the devil after being dissatisfied with his life), set during the 1950s in Washington, D.C., when the New York Yankees dominated Major League Baseball.

The original Broadway production ran for more than 1000 performances at the 46th Street Theatre (today the Richard Rodgers Theatre) from 1955 to 1957. It was directed by George Abbott, with scenery and costumes by William and Jean Eckart, and musical numbers staged by Fosse.

The film will be streaming this month for free in the US through TUBI TV. The stream will be available all week and can be accessed through our list of free musicals and plays.

In their 1957 review, Variety said: "Still held in prominence is the Richard Adler-Jerry Ross musical score – a tuneful, storytelling assortment of gag songs and ballads. Top production goes to ‘Two Lost Souls’ (a la ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’ from same pair’s Pajama Game) and ‘Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, Mo.’ ‘You’ve Gotta Have Heart’ remains a standout, with a seductive ‘Whatever Lola Wants’ and a fast-moving ‘Who’s Got the Pain’, danced with choreographer Bob Fosse, himself a fine hoofer."
