5 Best LGBTQ Broadway Musicals to Stream This Pride Month

5 Best LGBTQ Broadway Musicals to Stream This Pride Month

Pride Month is here once again—and for many, celebrating will include watching their favorite Broadway musicals. Thanks to the growing library of filmed Broadway musicals (pro-shots, as many call them), LGBTQ shows can now be watched worldwide and not just from the New York stage.

We've collected the 5 best Broadway and off-Broadway musicals to add to your Pride Month watch list:

Kinky Boots (2013)

Can we really have an LGBTQ+ Broadway list without Kinky Boots? The ultimate musical that strives for acceptance. But it's not just the musical itself that is centered across LGBTQ+ characters, it is also the creators themselves. We will never forget when in 2016 Kinky Boots took a stand and addressed the transgender bathroom rights with their own music video. Check that video out above, and make sure to stream Kinky Boots this Pride Month.

The West End production of Kinky Boots is streaming online now!

Falsettos

Filmed by a collaboration between BroadwayHD and Live from Lincoln Center, Falsettos is a complete must-watch. The 2016 Broadway Revival of William Finn's Tony-winning musical tells the story of Marvin, a Jewish family man who leaves his wife and son for a male lover during the height of the AIDS crisis in 1980s New York City.

You can stream Falsettos: The Broadway Musical online now.

Ruthless!

Ruthless! opened off-Broadway almost 30 years ago and discovered young performers including Britney Spears and Natalie Portman. The show famously spoofs Broadway musicals from Gypsy to Mame as well as iconic films including The Bad Seed and All About Eve.

The West End production of Ruthless! is now available to stream online.

RENT: Filmed Live on Broadway

Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway is probably one of our favorite filmed stage musicals, so no wonder it also made our Top 10 Broadway Musicals to Stream in 2022. When the show opened on Broadway in April 1996, it looked and sounded unlike any other musical that came before it. Rent tells the heartbreaking story of New York artists who try to find their way in the world while also battling the global pandemic of HIV/AIDS. The show gives visibility to black, white, and brown actors, playing straight, gay, bisexual, and transgender characters. It's the perfect time to stream Rent.

Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway is now available to stream.

Trevor the Musical

Coming later this month to Disney+ is Trevor the Musical. The musical, which was filmed off-Broadway last year, follows a charming 13-year-old boy as he struggles to navigate his own identity while becoming a teenager in 1981. We are so thankful Disney+ continued their trend of filming pro-shots following their previous title, and can't wait for the upcoming Aladdin!

The off-Broadway production of Trevor the Musical will be available to stream June 24th.
