Johnny Depp's Sweeney Todd Now Available for Free Streaming

The iconic "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," adapted into a film by Tim Burton in 2007, is now available for free streaming in the US and Canada through Pluto TV.

Starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, the movie received critical acclaim for its cinematography and faithful adaptation of the Broadway production. For those wanting to see where it all began, a remastered capture of the original Broadway stage production, featuring the legendary Angela Lansbury and George Hearn, can also be streamed online.

The third Broadway revival of "Sweeney Todd" opened for previews last month at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre to critical raves, starring Tony and Grammy nominee Josh Groban and Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford.

"Sweeney Todd" is a landmark musical, written by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler, that tells the story of a pie shop owner and a vengeful barber who team up to seek revenge against corrupt authorities in 19th century London.

The original Broadway production won eight Tony Awards in 1980, including Best Musical and Best Direction for Hal Prince, and its London premiere won the 1980 Olivier Award for Best Musical.

The 2007 adaptation of the musical is now available to stream for free through Pluto TV in the US and Canada. The movie can be streamed online through the Pluto platform and through most streaming devices with the Pluto TV app.

In a review by Todd McCarthy for Variety, the movie adaptation was praised for its narrow and heavily deterministic nature, which contributed to its R rating. Producers Richard Zanuck, Walter Parkes, and Laurie MacDonald, as well as Sondheim himself, were commended for their careful selection of cast and crew.

For those who can't get enough of the thrilling tale, "The Tale of Sweeney Todd," a 1997 television film by director John Schlesinger starring Ben Kingsley and Joanna Lumley, is also available for free streaming in the US and Canada through TUBI TV.
