National Theatre's Blues for an Alabama Sky to Stream Online

National Theatre at Home will soon welcome the filmed London production of "Blues for an Alabama Sky", captured live at the National Theatre's Lyttelton Theatre.

Set in New York of 1930, and following a decade of creative explosion, the Harlem Renaissance is starting to feel the bite of the Great Depression. In the face of hardship and dwindling opportunity, Angel and her friends battle to keep their artistic dreams alive.

But, when Angel falls for a stranger from Alabama, their romance forces the group to make good on their ambitions, or give in to the reality of the time.

Lynette Linton directed this unmissable revival of the Pearl Cleage play for the National Theatre in September 2022.

Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale, Orange Is the New Black) made her UK stage debut alongside Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo (Three Sisters), Osy Ikhile (Sweat), Sule Rimi (Barber Shop Chronicles) and Giles Terera (Death of England: Face to Face).

Blues for an Alabama Sky will be joining the National Theatre's NTatHome streaming library in all regions. The play will start streaming in April, with an exact date to be published soon.

In her review for The Guardian, Claire Armitstead said: "Played with a rangy charm by Sule Rimi, he holds the centre, reflecting the vivacity of his circle back on them, while brewing an ominous sense of tolerance and decency under pressure – not from gangsters or booze but from narrow-mindedness. When the reckoning comes, Cleage argues, it will not be due to revolution, crime or debauchery, but the encouragement of bigotry in the man on the street. A message for our times."
