Shakespeare’s King John Released for Free Streaming Globally

Direct from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, King John, filmed live at the Canadian venue, is now available to stream globally for free.

The 2015 production stars Tom McCamus as King John, Patricia Collins as Queen Eleanor, Andrew Lawrie as Prince Henry, Jennifer Mogbock as Blanche of Spain, Bradley C. Rudy as The Earl of Pembroke, and Stephen Russell as The Earl of Salisbury.

King John was filmed as part of the festival's "Stage to Screen" program which captures its seasonal productions for worldwide cinema release through Fathom Events.

The Stratford festival runs annually and is one of the most well-known art festivals in Canada, recognized worldwide for its productions of Shakespearean plays.

War is the inevitable result when the King of France demands that John relinquish his crown in favor of his nephew, the young Prince Arthur.

Excommunication, attempted atrocity, rebellion, and assassination all contribute to a political and personal turmoil that finds devastating expression in an anguished mother’s grief for her son.

King John now streams free globally through Broadway on Demand's "Broadway at Home" platform. The play is available now online and can be streamed through various streaming devices.

In his review for the Toronto Star, Richard Ouzounian said: "First, how many chances do you get to see this relatively obscure history play of Shakespeare’s? Even Stratford has only taken it off the shelf on five occasions in its 63-year history. And while it could be argued that some of it is heavy going, Tim Carroll’s brisk, no-nonsense direction keeps it moving and it has some wonderfully written scenes. Second, King John shows that Stratford has a superb acting company. The lead performances from Graham Abbey, Tom McCamus and Seana McKenna are as fine as you’d expect, but every supporting role is treated with class and distinction as well."
