George Takei’s Allegiance Musical and Behind-The-Scenes Film Stream Free Today

George Takei's Broadway musical Allegiance, starring Tony Award-winner Lea Salonga and Telly Leung streams free today thanks to Broadway on Demand.

The stream, which is available globally, will include the behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the musical, "Allegiance to Broadway".

The musical recently opened at London's Charing Cross Theatre, where it is now playing until April 8th starring both George Takei and Telly Leung.

Here's how to stream both the musical and the full-length documentary today:

Inspired by the life story of actor and activist George Takei, Allegiance tells the story of the Kimura family and their struggles in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor. In a world ravaged by the effects of war, Allegiance reveals the courage and loyalty of family in a time of great injustice as 120,000 Japanese Americans are forced into internment camps, testing the power and resilience of the human spirit.

Sam Kimura believes enlisting is the way to demonstrate his patriotism and win the freedom of his people. His sister Kei sides against him and joins the resistance movement in the camp. Soon the political conflict is mirrored within the Kimura family, leading brother and sister down starkly different paths as they decide where their allegiance lies.

Along with the live capture of the musical, a full-length documentary titled "Allegiance to Broadway" will be streaming as well. The film follows Jay Kuo and Lorenzo Thione along with the Broadway musical Allegiance’s creative team from page to stage, as the team grapples with the tough subject matter of this shameful period in American history, and their obligation to maintain and further George Takei’s legacy.

From rehearsals to marketing meetings and everywhere in between, this documentary sheds a light on the tough nature of show business and the creative decisions that all Broadway producers must face when trying to navigate the rough waters of the Great White Way.

George Takei's Allegiance will be streaming for free on January 28th at 6PM and 9PM ET through Broadway on Demand. A link to the free stream can now be found in our list of free musicals and plays.

The documentary "Allegiance to Broadway" will stream through the same link on January 28th at 4PM ET. Both will be streaming worldwide.

Created by Lorenzo Thione and Jay Kuo with a book by Marc Acito, George Takei's Allegiance held its world premiere at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in 2012 and later transferred to Broadway. The musical will open in London next month for its highly anticipated European premiere in a newly conceived production directed and choreographed by Tara Overfield Wilkinson, playing at Charing Cross Theatre.

The live capture of Allegiance was screened at more than 400 cinemas in North America and was a huge commercial success compared to the Broadway production, which only lasted several months. To meet demand, Fathom Events organized multiple repeat screenings throughout 2017 with producers later releasing the musical on DVD and as a special collector's package.

In her review for BritishTheatre, Libby Purves said: "Good musicals can face tough bleak stories and irredeemable losses, however necessary the upbeat final moment and triumphant curtain-call. And this is a good one.  Not perfect,  not perhaps among the musical greats,  but a piece of storytelling and performance which holds you fast.  And there is shivering power in watching how much it means to old Takei to tell it."
