West End Production of Great Expectations Streams Free Worldwide

The West End adaptation of Charles Dickens’ immortal novel "Great Expectations" is now streaming globally for free starting this weekend.

While there have been multiple adaptations of the piece over the years in both film and on stage, the live capture of the London production is the first time the story has been produced as a full-scale stage play in a professional setting.

Here's how to stream Great Expectations now:

Graham McLaren's breathtaking London production, filmed live on opening night, celebrates the best of Dickens' writing.

Some of his most memorable characters include the beautiful, chilling Estella, the terrifying convict Magwitch, the manipulative lawyer Jaggers, the tragic, mysterious Miss Havisham, and explores the epic story of Pip's tale as he looks back on his youth and his "great expectations".

Filmed live in London's Vaudeville theatre (now home to the smash-hit SIX), Great Expectations was initially broadcast live to cinemas around the UK and became the first West End show to simulcast its opening night in cinemas nationwide in 2013.

The Charles Dickens play can now be streamed in most markets for free thanks to TUBI TV. The play was added to our list of free musicals and plays and will be streaming for free starting January 7th, 2023.

In her review for The Guardian, Lyn Gardner said: "There are some good ideas, with the story framed as a memory play in which a middle-aged Pip observes his younger self through the cobwebs of time. It's clever, too, to set the entire show within Miss Havisham's crumbling drawing room, where worryingly vocal mice and the rotting wedding cake constantly remind you that this is a story not just of great expectations, but also destroyed illusions and lingering disappointments. McLaren takes it further by hinting that we all perform in life as if on stage, and he offers some of Dickens' larger-than-life characters as a series of white-faced grotesque turns."

The filmed production of Great Expectations stars Jack Ellis (Bad Girls, Coronation Street), Christopher Michael Ellison (The Bill), Paula Wilcox (Coronation Street, Man About The House), Paul Nivison (Taggart, City Lights), Grace Rowe (Call The Midwife, Apartment 41), Taylor Jay-Davies (How To Talk To Girls At Parties, Ben Hur, Ravers), Katy Allen (The Worst Witch), Gareth Glen (Taggart, Outpost: Rise of the Spetsnaz), Josh Elwell (ZingZillas, Big City Park, Pajanimals), Isabelle Joss (Spine Chillers, Pale Star, Shetland), Suzanne Robertson, James Vaughan (Mrs Brown, The Knock) and Rhys Warrington (Midnight Miracle).
