Julie Taymor's A Midsummer Night's Dream Streams Free Now

Captured in 2014 shortly after Taymor put the drama-filled production of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” behind her, this rendition of Shakespeare’s masterpiece was staged in a Brooklyn theater with fewer than 400 seats, although still budgeted at more than $2 million.

Featuring an incredible set, a dozen projectors, and creative puppetry, Taymor’s live capture of the performance was filmed towards the end of the show's sold-out engagement at Theatre for a New Audience's new home in Downtown Brooklyn.

The capture was shown at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and received rave reviews for both the cast and Taymor's direction.

Julie Taymor's A Midsummer Night's Dream is now streaming for free in the United States and Canada through TUBI TV. As always, a direct link has been added to our updating list of free musicals and plays. The play will be streaming for free until January 3rd, 2023.

In her review for the Seattle Times, Moira Macdonald said: "But theatrical productions, like dreams, are fleeting by nature, and we’re lucky to be able to see this one, however indirectly. Watch, and find yourself caught up in the braying silliness of the mechanicals’ production, or the breathless chase of the young lovers, or the sly byplay between “proud Titania” and her king of the shadows, Oberon. Taymor’s “Dream” is, in Bottom’s words, a most rare vision. It flickers before us almost too quickly, passing by 'swift as a shadow, short as any dream.'"
