New York City Ballet's The Nutcracker Streams Free This Month

The classic holiday performance of The Nutcracker, set to Tchaikovsky's score, George Balanchine's choreography, and performed by The New York City Ballet, has been released for free streaming all through the Christmas season!

George Balanchine's The Nutcracker is one of the most complex staged ballets in the world. For the first time in years, the New York Ballet production will stream the original production online for free and create more unforgettable memories for those unable to attend the live performance.

Here's how to stream The Nutcracker all month:

With more than 90 dancers, 62 musicians, 40 stagehands, and 60 children, the magical performance was filmed live and stars Darci Kistler, Damian Woetzel, Kyra Nichols, Bart Robinson Cook, Macaulay Culkin, Jessica Lynn Cohen, Wendy Whelan, Margaret Tracey, Gen Horiuchi, Tom Gold, and the New York City Ballet.

The show will start streaming today, December 7th, and will be available for 30 days in the United States and Canada. As always, a direct link to the stream has been added to our list of free streaming musicals and plays.

The film was originally produced by the Warner Bros. Family Entertainment label in 1993 and received mostly positive reviews from critics. In his review for Variety, Todd McCarthy said: "This rendition of George Balanchine’s perennial Christmastime ballet attraction proves attractive but unexciting as a screen offering. Basically a representation of the stage production with little added in terms of cinematic flair, Warner Bros. release will pull families on the basis of the property’s reputation as a holiday classic and the Macaulay Culkin casting coup, but will likely remain a modest earner."
