HAIRSPRAY Film with Queen Latifah Streams Free Now Through Amazon

The 2007 movie musical based on the Broadway hit HAIRSPRAY was released today for free streaming by Amazon's Freevee.

The film is an adaptation of the 2002 stage musical, which is based on the John Waters 1988 movie with Ricki Lake, Divine, and Jerry Stiller.

While the film is not an exact replica of the stage production, most of the Broadway score remains the same together with the award-winning script. The film stars John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, James Marsden, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley, and Allison Janney. Newcomer Nikki Blonsky starred in the title role.

Set in 1962 Baltimore, the film follows Tracy Turnblad as she pursues stardom as a dancer on a local TV dance show and stands up to her beliefs when she rallies against racial segregation.

Composers and lyricists Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman reworked their Broadway score for the film and wrote four new songs, two of which made it to the final cut of the film ("Ladies' Choice" and "Come So Far (Got So Far to Go)").

Amazon Freevee has now released the film for free streaming (ad-supported) in the United States. A direct link to the Freevee stream has been added to our updating list of free musicals. The musical will remain on the platform for the next three weeks.

The film was highly successful when it was released in theaters, earning a total gross of more than $200 million against a budget of $75 million. Hairspray is now the tenth highest-grossing movie musical in US cinema history.

Reviews for the film were positive, with the movie earning a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In his review for CNN, Tom Charity said: "Bright, campy and wonderfully light, "Hairspray" reminds us that fun comes in all shapes and sizes. It's also one of the few "event" movies this summer that doesn't outstay its welcome. That's worth singing about, no matter what your name is."
