5 Spooky Broadway Musicals to Stream This Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner and this is our friendly reminder there are some seriously spooky musicals you should consider to be part of your party this October!

We've collected our favorite titles that will be sure to keep you on the edge of your seat and are now available to stream:

1. The Phantom of the Opera

Sure, the classic Andrew Llyod Webber musical is not the typical horror piece, but we can all agree Phantom is giving enough spooky vibes to be included in our Halloween list. A man in a mask that lives in the Paris opera's dungeon? Yes.

The filmed production is of course the 25th-anniversary staged concert starring the immensely talented Sierra Boggess and current Funny Girl leading man Ramin Karimloo. Make no mistakes, this capture feels very similar to the stage version and was beautifully filmed by Universal at The Royal Albert Hall.

When Phantom ends its run on Broadway this February, we're really thankful a recording of the stage production will exist in some form. There have also been rumors about the Broadway production being filmed before closing. Until then, be sure to stream the fantastic 25th anniversary this Halloween.

2. Love Never Dies

A musical sequel doesn't come around too often, and Love Never Dies is perhaps the perfect musical for Halloween. Ten years after the events at the Paris Opera, the Phantom now lives in Coney Island and runs a creepy amusement park called Phantasma.

Although Lloyd Webber said he sees Love Never Dies as a stand-alone piece, we highly recommend starting your watch party with The Phantom of the Opera and adding Love Never Dies right after. What else could be better than a 5-hour Phantom marathon?

The musical was filmed back in 2012 in Australia, as Andrew Lloyd Webber regarded that production as the one that managed to fully realize his vision for the piece. Universal Studios captured the production in Melbourne and released it together with the Phantom's 25th anniversary.

3. Sweeney Todd

In a year in which we lost the great Angela Lansbury, we feel it only makes sense to include the unforgettable capture of the touring company of Sweeny Todd from 1982. Angela appeared in the original Broadway production of Sweeney Todd and later went out on tour with George Hearn, where the show was filmed.

The capture is perhaps one of the first well-known musical pro-shots and theater fans still consider it one of the best, to this day.

While there are multiple versions of Sweeney Todd streaming nowadays, we highly recommend putting on the original classic this Halloween, if not only for that chilling factory whistle.

4. Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical

The 2000 Broadway production of Jekyll and Hyde is one of our favorite captures to stream on Halloween. While some might say David Hasselhoff's performance is just as scary as the musical itself, we truly believe there's much fun to be had when watching this capture.

The catchy Frank Wildhorn score, together with the creepy sets and strong supporting cast is really making this a must-see in our eyes.

The filming took place at Broadway's Plymouth Theatre (Now The Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre) over a couple of performances, where some were captured with Hasselhoff's alternate at the time, Rob Evan. Maybe, just maybe, that rehearsal shot is also available to stream on some popular video sites.

5. Toxic Avenger

Written by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan (creators of another horror musical, Diana), The Toxic Avenger is a light-hearted rock musical based on the classic cult film of the same name.

The plot revolves around Melvin Ferd the Third, who wants to clean up Tromaville, the most polluted town in New Jersey. Foiled by the mayor's bullies, Melvin is dumped into a vat of radioactive toxic waste, only to reemerge as The Toxic Avenger, New Jersey's first superhero.

Now known as Toxie, the new hero is now a seven-foot mutant freak with superhuman strength and "a heart as big as Newark". Toxie is out to save New Jersey, end global warming, and woo the blind librarian in town.

Following a successful run off-Broadway, the musical transferred to London's Arts Theatre in 2016 and was captured by Liberator Film Services (An American in Paris, 42nd Street, Kinky Boots).
