Heathers Watch Party: Stream the Musical and 1989 Film Back to Back This Sunday

It has been exactly one month since the release of the 2022 West End live capture of Heathers the Musical, making it the perfect weekend to host a proper Heathers watch party.

Both the 1989 cult film starring Winona Ryder and the 2022 stage musical pro-shot (filmed earlier this year at London's The Other Palace) have been released for free streaming and are now available through multiple streaming platforms.

Here's how to catch the two Heathers films this weekend (and some tips for the perfect Heathers Watch Party):

The filmed production of Heathers, released exactly one month ago today has been a huge hit for Roku's streaming channel, which is considered the most successful AVOD service in the US with an estimated 70 million viewers.

While official viewership numbers have not been released, social media mentions for Heathers increased by more than 300% since the release of the film, especially in regions where the show is not currently playing.

The Roku Channel acquired the rights for the live capture earlier this year after STEAM Motion and Sound captured the show in May at London's The Other Palace. While the platform is ad-supported, a Roku device is not required and the stream is free to watch: simply download The Roku Channel app to any streaming device, or visit the web platform of The Roku Channel from any web browser.

While Heathers is currently geo-blocked and streams only in the US and Canada, international dates are expected to be revealed soon. Due to the Roku platform being available only in select markets, global distribution of the live capture might happen outside of the Roku platform.

Along with the musical pro-shot, the original 1989 film starring Winona Ryder is streaming for free through Tubi and Pluto TV. Despite being a box office flop in the '80s, the original Heathers film is still considered to this today one of the greatest coming-of-age films of all time. The film has been restored in 4K and regained popularity in recent years.

In his original review for The Washington Post, Deasson Howe said: "'Heathers' may be the nastiest, cruelest fun you can have without actually having to study law or gird leather products. If movies were food, "Heathers" would be a cynic's chocolate binge."

With book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O'Keefe, Heathers the Musical is based on one of the greatest cult teen films of all time, and starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. The stage production (and live capture) is directed by Andy Fickman, with choreography by Gary Lloyd, designs by David Shields, lighting by Ben Cracknell and sound by Dan Samson. The musical is still playing to packed houses in London's West End and has recently extended its run to February 2023.
