Sweeney Todd Star Angela Lansbury Passes Away at 96

This is an updating story.

Dame Angela Lansbury has passed away at the age of 96.

Lansbury's family released the following statement, earlier today: "The children of Dame Angela Lansbury are sad to announce that their mother died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1:30 AM today, Tuesday, October 11, 2022, just five days shy of her 97th birthday. In addition to her three children, Anthony, Deirdre, and David, she is survived by three grandchildren, Peter, Katherine and Ian, plus five great-grandchildren and her brother, producer Edgar Lansbury. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Peter Shaw. A private family ceremony will be held on a determined date."

Angela Lansbury appeared in the live capture of Sweeney Todd in 1982, which is considered to be one of the first hugely successful filmed stage musicals. The filmed production went on to win several Primetime Emmy Awards.

Years later, Lansbury appeared in the filmed stage production of Driving Miss Daisy alongside James Earl Jones. While the production played an extended Broadway engagement,  it was only later filmed in Australia at the Comedy Theatre in Melbourne for PBS Great Performances and is now available to stream online.
