Filmed Space Dogs Musical to Be Released This Month

The streaming platform teamed up with MCC Theater to bring the Off-Broadway musical to viewers globally direct from its recent New York engagement.

The musical had a short run in January 2022 at the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space and tells the true story of Laika and the Chief Designer — a stray dog and the top-secret scientist who sent her to space during the Cold War.

Here's what to expect from Space Dogs: The Musical, coming this month:

The unusual musical is written and performed by Van Hughes (Burn All Night) and Nick Blaemire (Glory Days) which are joined by an assortment of puppets, stuffed animals, and musical instruments to tell the funny adventures of Laika and the Chief Designer.

Shortly before closing off-Broadway, the show added a final evening performance to accommodate the live BroadwayHD capture, inviting audience members to be "a part of the studio experience and in on the secret."

While the show had a short run Off-Broadway, it managed to be extended twice by MCC and record a cast album produced by Kurt Deutsch, which is now streaming as well.

Space Dogs: The Musical will premiere on BroadwayHD on October 13th, 2022, and will be available globally as a BroadwayHD original.

According to press notes, Ellie Heyman directs the MCC Theater production, with choreography by Darrell Grand Moultrie, scenic design by Wilson Chin, costume design by Haydee Zelideth Atuñano, lighting design by Mary Ellen Stebbins, sound design by Nathan Leigh, projection design by Stefania Bulbarella and Alex Basco Koch, and puppet and props design by Amanda Villalobos.
