Classic Musical HAIR Streams Free This Week

Based on the original 1968 Broadway smash musical "Hair: An American Tribal Love-Rock Musical", the 1979 move musical HAIR will be streaming this week for free!

The classic film tells the story of a Vietnam War draftee, Claude, who meets and befriends a tribe of long-haired hippies on his way to the army induction center.

Claude heads to New York upon receiving his draft notice, leaving the family ranch in Oklahoma. He arrives in New York where he is rapidly indoctrinated into the youth subculture before reporting in for boot camp.

Following the original off-Broadway production in 1967, Hair moved to Broadway the following year and ran for more than 1,700 performances. The musical became a huge hit, with songs from its score reaching the Top 10 hits at the time.

A Broadway revival opened in 2009, winning Some of the songs from its score became Top 10 hits, and a feature film adaptation was released in 1979. A Broadway revival opened in 2009, winning the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

The musical will be available to stream through TUBI until October 15th, a link has been added to our list of free streaming musicals.

The film originally did not receive positive reviews from critics, with Joseph Gelmis from Newsday saying that "Hair is worth seeing for its razzle dazzle choreography by Twyla Tharp and the visual pyrotechnics of cameraman Miroslav Ondrícek. It's a big brassy musical. What the film lacks most is depth of character."

Derek Malcolm for the Guardian said: "The fact of the matter is that the under-25s who form the main part of most audiences nowadays are receiving it as a blinding revelation. Unfortunately, it's stale cheese to me, and I'm writing this review."

The film stars John Savage as Claude, Treat Williams as George, Beverly D'Angelo as Sheila, Annie Golden as Jeannie, and Dorsey Wright as Lafayette.
