Billy Crystal's Broadway Musical Mr. Saturday Night Filmed for Release

Billy Crystal's Broadway Musical Mr. Saturday Night Filmed for Release

Is BroadwayHD back at filming musicals on Broadway? It seems so.

It was announced today that the Broadway musical "Mr. Saturday Night", which played its final performance on September 4th, will be streaming through BroadwayHD in the near future.

The show didn't manage to fill the medium-sized Nederlander Theater during its run and had to close earlier this month after having played just 28 previews and 116 performances. The musical, however, was granted five Tony-Award nominations.

Mr. Saturday Night was filmed live at Broadway's Nederlander Theater in its final week of performances and will mark BroadwayHD's first filmed Broadway production in years.

While mostly managing to capture West End musicals, BroadwayHD previously worked with Broadway unions to capture shows like She Loves Me, Holiday Inn, FalsettosPresent Laughter, and Indecent.

No streaming date has been announced for the musical at this time. It is expected the streaming platform will debut Billy Crystal's five-time Tony-Award nominated musical in the coming months.

Here's everything to know about this exciting capture, and the Broadway production of Mr. Saturday Night:

The musical tells the story of Buddy Young Jr., an outrageous and outspoken comedian who found fame, if not fortune, in the early days of television. Now, some 40 years after his TV career flamed out, Buddy seeks one more shot at the spotlight, and while he's at it, one last shot at fixing the family he fractured along the way.

As part of the press release, Billy Crystal said, "Mr. Saturday Night...has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I'm ecstatic audiences around the world who weren't able to come to the Nederlander Theatre will now have the opportunity to experience Mr. Saturday Night from home on BroadwayHD."

Streaming platform BroadwayHD has paid for the worldwide rights to distribute the musical, which means the production will be available on their platform without any geographical restrictions.
