Three Generations of ANNIE You Can Now Stream for Free

Annie, one of the most beloved Broadway classics of all time, was such a huge hit when it premiered in 1977 that it spanned multiple sequels, film adaptations, and revivals throughout the last 40 years.

This week, three generations of ANNIE will be streaming online. Here's how to catch all three:

The first film version of the original musical premiered in 1982 starring Albert Finney as Warbucks, Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan, Ann Reinking as Grace Farrell, Tim Curry as Rooster, Bernadette Peters as Lily, and newcomer Aileen Quinn as Annie.

The film was released in May 1982, just months before the original production closed on Broadway. To this day, it is considered one of the most loved adaptations of the musical with unforgettable performances from Carol Burnett and cast.

In 1995, Columbia Pictures created a made-for-television sequel titled "Annie: A Royal Adventure!" that starred Ashley Johnson, Joan Collins, George Hearn, and Ian McDiarmid.

The sequel continues the original plot, where Daddy Warbucks and twelve-year-old Annie travel to Britain where Warbucks is to be knighted by His Majesty the King. However, the kids get in the middle of a scheme of the evil Lady Edwina Hogbottom (played by Joan Collins) to blow up Buckingham Palace while all the heirs to the throne are present for the knighting.

While this version has no musical numbers, the show's hit anthem "Tomorrow" does make an appearance towards the end of the film.

Years later, Will Smith produced a remake of the original film set in the present day. Produced together with his wife Jada and rapper Jay-Z, the film was released in 2014 and stars Jamie Foxx as Will Stacks, Rose Byrne as Grace Farrell, and Cameron Diaz as Miss Hannigan.

While the film included most hit songs from the original production, the music was rearranged by Sia and Greg Kurstin to reflect its new contemporary setting. Three new songs were written by Sia and Kurstin for the film: "Opportunity", "Who Am I", and "MoonQuake Lake".

All three versions of Annie are now streaming online, for free, in the US. We've added direct links to all of them in our updating list of free musicals and plays.
