Company Revival Filmed During Last Week of Performances

Marianne Elliott’s reimagined gender-swapped production of Stephen Sondheim's Company has been filmed this week at Broadway's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

Company is perhaps the most documented Sondheim musical, with both the 2007 John Doyle Broadway production and the 2011 concert starring Patti LuPone and Neil Patrick Harris filmed for release, and widely available to stream.

While the current filming will preserve the 2022 revival for generations to come, it is not expected to be publicly released. The recording is produced by The New York Public Library's Theatre on Film and Tape Archive.

Here's all we know about the 2002 Company recording, and the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive:

What is the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive?

The Theatre on Film and Tape Archive (TOFT) was founded in 1970 to preserve and document live theatrical productions. The first play to be recorded was Golden Bat, a unique Off-Broadway Japanese rock musical that played at the Sheridan Square Playhouse for 157 performances.

TOFT works with each show's producing team and the theatrical unions to film a large collection of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional productions every year. The collection has been recognized as the largest collection of filmed live theatre in the world.

The Archive was founded by Betty L. Corwin, an assistant to Broadway producer Martin Gabel, who approached the Library in 1969 with the idea to preserve live theatre. Today, the collection consists of over 5,000 musicals and plays and an additional 3,000 videos of other theater-related content (such as interviews and television adaptations). Anyone can freely browse all available titles through the library's official site.

How can I watch shows from the archive?

During its 50 years of operation, theatre professionals and researchers came from all over the world to view the recordings at the Library. At this time, anyone with a New York Public Library card and a Special Collections account may use TOFT. To sign-up for a card and account, visit the TOFT site. Filmed productions may only be viewed on-site and one time only, with shows that are currently running not available for viewing.

Filmed productions may only be viewed on-site and one time only, with shows that are currently running not available for viewing. The library offers walk-in access to its collections, but for faster access, an appointment is encouraged. For an appointment, you may call the library at (212) 870-1642 or email them directly at toft@nypl.org.

TOFT does not publicly distribute any of the filmed productions from its library due to the contracts set with the theatre unions that made these captures possible. Thankfully, over 175 productions were released publicly and are available to stream.
