The 1965 production was actually a remake of the original TV airing that starred Julie Andrews. The original version aired in 1957 and was so successful that CBS decided to air a "revival" of the show a couple of years later.

We've added the musical to our updating list of free musicals and plays you can stream online.

The show was broadcast on CBS on February 22, 1965, and was named the highest-rated non-sports television event on CBS up until 2010.

Since Oscar Hammerstein II had passed away a couple of years before the broadcast, Richard Rodgers was the one who took the lead on this production and served as the Executive Producer on set. The production features music by Richard Rodgers and a book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.

Starring in the broadcast are Lesley Ann Warren (making her television debut), Stuart Damon, Celeste Holm, Walter Pigeon, and Ginger Rogers.

The cut song "Loneliness of Evening," was removed from the original 1949 production, and appears in this live filming. The song was later added to the 2013 Broadway production.
