Broadway Musical Allegiance With Lea Salonga Streams Free Today

The filmed Broadway production of George Takei's Allegiance will be streaming for free today, for a limited period of 24 hours only!

Featuring Tony Award-winner Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon), Telly Leung (Godspell, Glee) and George Takei himself, Allegiance was filmed during its original Broadway run in 2016 at the Longacre Theatre by Sing Out, Louise! productions (who also filmed Bandstand on Broadway).

The musical will soon premiere in the UK in a new and intimate production at the Charing Cross Theatre starring both George Takei and Telly Leung.

Here's how to stream the original production of Allegiance right now:

Allegiance tells the personal story of George Takei, and begins when a mysterious envelope leads Sam Kimura (George Takei) back 60 years to a time when his young self (Telly Leung) and his sister Kei (Lea Salonga) tried to save their family from the wrongful imprisonment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

Sam enlists in the army to prove his family's loyalty, while Kei joins the draft resisters fighting for the rights of their people. Their paths take them from the lush farmlands of California to the wastelands of Wyoming to the battlefields of Europe, and their divided loyalties threaten to tear them apart forever. But as long-lost memories are re-lived and a new perspective is gained, Sam finds that it is never too late to forgive and experience the redemptive power of love.

George Takei's Allegiance will be available to stream for free on October 5th for a limited period of 24 hours. We've added a link to the stream on our updating list of free musicals and plays. The musical will be streaming in all regions of the world.

Allegiance first premiered in 2009 at the Japanese American National Museum after starting development in 2008. Several years later, a full production of the musical was produced at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego which received positive reviews from critics.

A reworked Broadway production began previews in October 2015 and opened the following month with most of the original San Diego cast. Following mixed reviews and a tough winter period, the musical closed after nearly 120 regular performances.

The musical will soon premiere in the UK in a new and more intimate production, which was conceived specifically for the Charing Cross Theatre. The production will be directed and choreographed by Tara Overfield Wilkinson (Little Shop of Horrors UK tour).

The filmed performance was screened at more than 500 cinemas in North America and was a huge commercial success. The capture had multiple screenings all over the world before becoming available on DVD and streaming.

In her review for USA Today, Elysa Gardner said: "The book, by Kuo, Marc Acito and Lorenzo Thione, can deal affectingly with the conflicts that tradition and current events may pose in any family. And director Stafford Arima culls potent performances from his actors, among them Christòpheren Nomera, cast as Kei and Sammy's proud, stoic father. Michael K. Lee plays Frankie Suzuki, a witty rebel who loves Kei but clashes with her brother, who joins the army to prove his patriotism. These developments and others in Allegiance are accompanied by contrivances, and a few more lame jokes. But if you can make a critic who sneered in the first act leave the theater a little teary-eyed, you're probably doing something right."
