Classic Film The Pajama Game Streams Free This Week

The 1957 film adaptation of the Broadway hit "The Pajama Game" will be streaming all week for free.

Based on the 1954 stage musical, the film version features most of the principal cast of the original Broadway production - Doris Day as Katherine "Babe" Williams, John Raitt as Sid Sorokin, Carol Haney as Gladys Hotchkiss, Eddie Foy Jr. as Vernon "Hine-sie" Hines, and Reta Shaw as Mabel.

Choreography is by Bob Fosse, who was also the original choreographer for the Broadway run.

Here's how to stream The Pajama Game this weekend:

The boss of an Iowa pajama factory hires superintendent Sid Sorokin (John Raitt) to help oppose the workers' demand for a seven-and-a-half-cent raise. Sid's handsome, affable presence stirs the jealousy of foreman Vernon Hines, who is dating bookkeeper Gladys Hotchkiss (Carol Haney), and attracts worker "Babe" Williams (Doris Day), a strong advocate for the pay increase. Despite liking Babe, Sid resists the workers' sabotage attempt and must decide whether to fire activist Babe.

The original production opened on Broadway in 1954 and ran for more than 1,003 performances, and was since revived twice on Broadway. The last revival was produced by the Roundabout Theater Company and starred Harry Connick Jr. in his Broadway debut as Sid alongside Kelli O'Hara as Babe.

The film will be streaming this month for free in the US through TUBI TV. The stream will be available all week and can be accessed through our list of free musicals and plays.

In his review for The New Yorker, Richard Brody said: "The directors, Stanley Donen and George Abbott, bring the unusually realistic story to life with bold and graceful camera moves and imaginative staging; Bob Fosse’s agile, angular choreography has the graphic appeal of modernist typography in motion; and the supporting cast features the wide-eyed, loose-limbed, and wildly spontaneous Carol Haney (who died young), camping and vamping with abandon."
