Julie Taymor's A Midsummer Night's Dream Now Streaming for Free

From the mind of award-winning director Julie Taymor (The Lion King, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) comes a stunning interpretation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, filmed live in performance.

Captured shortly after Taymor has put the drama-filled production of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” behind her, this production of Shakespeare’s masterpiece was staged in a Brooklyn theater with fewer than 400 seats, although still budgeted at more than $2 million.

Taymor's fantastic production has now been released for free streaming, and here's how to watch:

Featuring a breathtaking set, a dozen projectors, and creative puppetry, Taymor’s film was captured during regurlary scheduled performances of the critically acclaimed, sold-out stage production that ran at Theatre for a New Audience's new home in Downtown Brooklyn. The capture was shown at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival to great acclaim.

In his review for the Hollywood Reporter, David Rooney said: "The director’s signature devices — masks, puppets, shadow play, fabric that pours like liquid, and stylistic techniques borrowed from Balinese and Japanese theater — work well on film, as do the more cinematic elements of Donald Holder‘s dramatic lighting and video designer Sven Ortel‘s projections of psychedelic flowers and billowing clouds."

Julie Taymor's A Midsummer Night's Dream has now been added to our updating list of free musicals and plays. The play will be streaming for free until September 5th.
