Actor Injured Mid-Show at The Play That Goes Wrong Filming

The Play That Goes Wrong... went a little too "wrong" yesterday at the show's filming at the Broadway Playhouse in Chicago. Dave Hearn, the founding member of the Olivier Award-winning Mischief Theatre who plays Max, injured himself during the live filming of the show.

Here's what we know about all that went "wrong":

As previously announced on Filmed on Stage, the hit West End and Broadway hit The Play That Goes Wrong was filmed live on June 25 with the original UK cast.

Having just reunited for the same roles last month, the original Mischief Theatre cast of The Play That Goes Wrong appeared in the UK tour of the show in Manchester (May 30 - June 4) and Newcastle (June 6 - 11).

Returning to their roles for the filming, for the first time in 7 years, were Rob Falconer (Trevor), Dave Hearn (Max), Henry Lewis (Robert), Charlie Russell (Sandra), Jonathan Sayer (Dennis), Henry Shields (Chris), Greg Tannahill (Jonathan) and Nancy Zamit (Annie).

During the live taping on June 25, actor Dave Hearn was injured by a set piece. The show was then paused for several minutes for the production to assess Hearn's injury. The show later resumed with Hearn in the role and an understudy who performed some of the more complex physical moments in the show.

Filming later paused several times throughout the show to allow the understudy to take over for the physical shots. Filmed on Stage learns that the plan might be to add audience reactions captured on June 25 onto previously recorded shots with Hearn in the role, performing the physical scenes.

The show was filmed in Chicago's Broadway Playhouse theatre utilizing eight high-definition cameras. The recent US national tour played an extended engagement from December 14, 2021, to May 29, 2022 in Chicago's Broadway Playhouse Theatre.

While no production company or release information was revealed yet, more details about the release of The Play That Goes Wrong should become available later this year.
