London’s The Prince of Egypt Musical Eying 2022 Release

The recent West End production of The Prince of Egypt - the Musical was filmed for release in December 2021 and is expected to be released this year!

Here's all we know about the release of the Stephen Schwartz musical:

Opening just a short month before the theater industry shutdown, The Prince of Egypt played at the Dominion Theatre for two short periods. The musical ultimately closed in January 2022 but was filmed for release in December by Universal Studios International.

The Prince of Egypt has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell) and features 10 new songs together with 5 of his beloved songs from the DreamWorks Animation film (When You Believe, Deliver Us, All I Ever Wanted, Through Heaven’s Eyes and The Plagues).

Producing the live capture is "STEAM Motion & Sound", which filmed the recent Waitress Broadway revivalAladdin in the West EndKinky Boots, and Newsies the Musical. The show was filmed three times, both with and without an audience for close-ups and crane shots. Visit our Prince of Egypt photo gallery to view exclusive photos from the filming at the Dominion Theatre.

While no release date was given when the filming was originally announced back in January, it has now been revealed that the film is currently in post-production ahead of a late 2022 release. Universal is expected to first release the film to movie theaters in select markets and later distribute the show on home media.

Dreamworks Theatricals, lead producer for The Prince of Egypt, previously filmed their Broadway production of Shrek the Musical back in 2009 and released it several years later on DVD and Blu-Ray when the show ended all touring engagements. The musical had no showings in movie theaters.

The Prince of Egypt, which played its final performance at London’s Dominion Theatre on January 8th, 2022 is not planning a Broadway transfer or further touring productions at this time.

The musical is directed by Scott Schwartz with choreography by Sean Cheesman; set designs by Kevin Depinet; costume designs by Ann Hould-Ward; lighting design by Mike Billings; and sound design by Gareth Owen.
