Pippin opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre October 23, 1972. The original Broadway production as well as the tour captured on film were both directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse.

The original production played five previews and 1,994 performances before closing five years later on June 12, 1977, earning 11 Tony Award nominations, winning five, including Best Actor in a Musical for Ben Vereen.

Stream the musical for free through our PIPPIN page, for a limited time.

The musical is led by a Leading Player which tells the story of Pippin, a young prince on his search for meaning and significance. The protagonist, Pippin, and his father, Charlemagne, are characters derived from two real-life individuals of the early Middle Ages, though the plot is fictional and presents no historical accuracy regarding either.

The cast in the filmed production includes Ben Vereen as Leading Player, William Katt as Pippin, Chita Rivera as Fastrada, Leslie Denniston as Catherine, and Benjamin Rayson as Charlemagne.
