Broadway's 'Allegiance' starring Lea Salonga to be released on DVD in January

The filmed presentation of the 2015 Broadway musical Allegiance, based on events in George Takei's Japanese-American family during World War II, is expected to be released as part of a special 2-DVD set in January 2019. Pre-orders are now open.

In addition to the film of the original Broadway production, the Special Edition box set will include the new documentary, Allegiance to Broadway: The Dream. The Story. The Journey of A Musical, by director/filmmaker Greg Vander Veer. The documentary gives audiences an in-depth look into the making of the original musical.

“At a time when the ugly echoes of fear and racial prejudice once again grow louder, remembering our history becomes critical,” Takei said in a statement. “Pearl Harbor and WWII put our country to the test, and while the nation rose up to the challenge and fought our enemies abroad, sadly we also turned against our own at home and inflicted an injustice that should never be forgotten. It fills me with great pride that audiences will be able to both experience this important story through Allegiance, as well as to get a behind-the-scenes look at the labor of love and the journey that took Allegiance from concept to the Broadway stage in this new, fascinating documentary.”

Allegiance has a book by Marc Acito, Jay Kuo, and Lorenzo Thione with music and lyrics by Kuo. Olivier Award nominee Stafford Arima directed in his Broadway debut. Andrew Palermo served as choreographer.

The complete cast featured Takei as Sam Kimura/Ojii San, Salonga as Kei Kimura, Leung as Sammy Kimura, Katie Rose Clarke as Hannah Campbell, Michael K. Lee as Frankie Suzuki, Christopheren Nomura as Tatsuo Kimura, and Greg Watanabe as Mike Masaoka with Aaron J. Albano, Belinda Allyn, Marcus Choi, Janelle Dote, Dan Horn, Owen Johnston, Darren Lee, Manna Nichols, Rumi Oyama, Catherine Ricafort, Momoko Sugai, Sam Tanabe, Kevin Munhall, Elena Wang, Scott Watanabe, and Tony winner Scott Wise.

Allegiance had its world premiere in a record-breaking engagement at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in 2012. It is produced by Sing Out, Louise! Productions and ATA.

Allegiance officially opened on Broadway November 8, 2015, following previews that began October 6 at Broadway's Longacre Theatre. At closing, the production played 37 previews and 113 regular performances.
