The Golden Age of the American Musical film is generally considered the 1940s through the 1950s when the genre's popularity was at its highest in the Western world. During that era, the studio that became the specialist in movie musicals was MGM - with such notable films as Singin' in the Rain (1952), An American in Paris (1951), On the Town (1949), Mdet Me in St. Louis (1944), and Gigi (1958).
MGM's "Till the Clouds Roll By" is the first movie musical to stream for free - a light bio-pic of American Broadway pioneer Jerome Kern, featuring renditions of the famous songs from his musical plays by contemporary stage artists, including a condensed production of his most famous: 'Showboat'.
